RECORDING SESSION #9

It’s our second last day of tracking. We are starting to sew up the loose ends and add the final touches to some of the songs before we begin the mixing process.

A couple of the songs needed an extra push, something to drive them. I didn’t want to put drums on this record so it required us to add intensity in other ways. We layered harmonies, added base lines that went from playing whole notes to quarter notes, and ask the lead instruments to be a little busier during certain sections of the song to push them along.

As we were listening to the tracks, there were two songs specifically that I really thought would benefit from a snare drum and brushes. But I really wanted to stick to my original vision of no drums. This album is a strings album, meaning the only instruments that you’ll hear on this album are strings. There are acoustic guitars, and electric guitar on one song, upright bass, electric bass, fiddle, mandolin, and pedal steel - all stringed instruments.

Jason Valleau had a great idea. Why don’t I lay my bass down on its side and use brushes to make a percussive sound. It worked great.
