RECORDING SESSION #6

Today the songs really started to take shape. Bruce Hoffman, originally from the US but who now makes his home in Alberta brought his Sho Bud pedal steel guitar to the studio.

I can’t wait for everyone to hear these songs. Bruce is contribution in the studio took the songs to the next level in the same way that icing add detail and beauty to a cake. Myself and Jason Valleau on base and Aaron Young on guitar had baked a pretty good cake in the studio up until this point. Bruce is playing did two things it not only coloured the song, but it also acted as a glue making all the parts of guitar vocals and bass seemingly tighter.

Bruce is playing is so good that it was hard not to want him to play on every song from the start to the finish. But I wanted to steal to be a special thing that came in and out of songs and that you didn’t hear on every track so that when a song ended and the next one did have steel on it again, it sounded special again and stood out.

I left the studio today feeling like we really have captured something special in these songs. I’ve never felt this comfortable in a yes sweetheart, go ahead. Go ahead recording situation before. Previously, I’ve had problems with anxiety and choking under pressure.

Recording without a click, although it has its limitations, was a huge bonus for me. It allowed me to perform the songs like I would on stage spending energy on a good vocal take emoting the lyrics and a solid guitar performance, instead of trying to pay attention to the click in my headphones something I have never gotten used to. I’m not sure either will.
