RECORDING SESSION #10

If you’ve been following along, you know that I’ve been making a record over the last couple months. It’s 11 new songs. Today was the last day of tracking. For those who don’t know what that might mean it means it was the last day that we actually recorded ourselves. That doesn’t mean the project is done. It just means we’ve gotten all of the vocal tapes and instrument takes that we need.

Today, my longtime pal and fiddler extraordinaire Scott Duncan came into add some fiddle to some of the songs. On four songs, Scott added some fills and a solo section.

We spent the rest of the afternoon listening to the songs with the idea of finding what edits the tracks needed. The editing stage is where we might take out bits and pieces of instruments. When you have more than one lead instruments on a song, it’s important that they don’t clash and stay out of each other’s way. There wasn’t a lot to edit on these songs but a couple times the fiddle and the pedal steel were in conflict so we removed one of those instruments.

The next date is to mix the songs. The mixing stage is where we will adjust. The volume of individual vocal takes and instrument takes. It’s also the stage where we might add effects like compression, reverb, and other effects to enhance the tone or timber of voices in instruments.

thought I knew what the title of this album was gonna be but now I’m not sure. I need to start thinking about images for album covers, the order of the songs, and went to release this new recording.
