SOMEWHERE NORTH OF NASHVILLE
SOMEWHERE NORTH OF NASHVILLE by Bruce Springsteen
Today, I drove back to Calgary to begin (finally!!) recording my 9th studio album. I'm recording at owned and operated by Calgary musician Aaron Young. It's gonna be a stripped down sparse recording but I'll tell you more about that later once we get deeper into the recording process.
Before I left Lethbridge, I watched the trailer to the new Bruce Springsteen movie "Deliver Me From Nowhere". I'm a big fan of The Boss despite coming to him quite late in life. I have been a little obsessed with his album Western Stars released in 2019. It is accompanied by a beautifully shot documentary that I first watched on an Air Canada flight at the beginning of an east coast tour. There are so many great songs on this album with "Moonlight Motel" being my fave. Above is a version of his song "Somewhere North of Nashville" The song on the album clocks in at only one minute and 45 seconds but it is a tiny little nugget of Bruce magic.
Once in Calgary, myself, Jason Valleau (upright bass) and Aaron Young (engineer) settled in to our first day in the studio. We got at it pretty fast as we have decided that we would only work in 3 hour increments. It didn't take long to position the microphones and rolling to digital tape.
We started with a song called "Brave the Hive" and did about 5-6 takes. We then moved to a song called "If It Ain't The Heart". Again, we did 5-6 takes and felt like we got something very close to the take.
We'll be returning to the studio tomorrow night to lay down some more. Stay tuned.
